Fringe Binge - it's a thing!

Well second week back at school, it's another Monday and I must say it has hit me hard. No longer am I the king pin of the holiday household. It's all 'get your uniform on', 'eat your breakfast' or the universal 'you'll be late for school'. It's tough, especially given the fabulous fun I have been having at Perth's amazing Fringeworld! Yes I have been indulging spectacularly bingeing on Fringe, Fringeing it with the best of them, dragging 'Those that Bore Me' to a huge array of talented peeps both local and far.
Some of the kids shows are not on for long, so to review them in depth is kind of boring considering that many of the shows that I may whet your appetite for (and let's face it you know I can!) are no longer on. But hey the Fringe is still on (yes it is indeed) and here are some of my highlights that may inspire you to check out and make your own favourites! After all the Fringeworld precincts are still pumping, and soaking up the vibes is still an option until the 19th of February! That's a whole lot more fun to be had to take your mind off the drudgery of school (yes that photo above is me with the Set for Life lotto girls last week, may those numbers come in...)
In the meantime here we go...
Rockstar School
Tessa Waters is one dynamic lady with some awesome dance moves - she had our whole Gold Diggers tent up and out of the seats learning some amazing rock star moves. Who can forget the 'growl like a tiger, then pretend you just smelt a horrible fart' signature lead singer photo face for the paparazzi? I can't, and I can't stop practicing it. There are a whole lot of laughs for the parents as well as the kids (Big M told me that Tessa was the MC for the official opening of Fringeworld, so she knows how to please a crowd - even one full of politicians). A particularly revealing moment was when the techno rave music came on and a large number of parents REALLY got into it. Now I think I know what Big M means when she talks about the old Ibiza days? Unfortunately there are some things that cannot be unseen. Great fun, a true talent - conga line anyone?

Balloonatics.
Fronting up to the Brass Monkey, I was not sure what to expect of a Scottish balloon artist in a pub on a small stage with about 100 people crammed into a really badly laid out seating arrangement. Fortunately, the star of Balloonatics - although not spectacular at balloon twisting - was hilarious. As Big M nursed her pint of Stella (there's a bonus right there) much chortling and hilarity ensued as comedian Chris Henry kept the double meaning jokes flying and audience participation well up. It's not often you get to see three dad's smeared with green paint and transformed into some shelled super heroes. Yep, even I got up on stage as a denouncer of the way easy ballooning sculptures - bad move on my part. My key line which got me my first ever large audience laugh, "I regret saying that now". Don't regret the show though, awesome.

Little Red: Who's Afraid of the Big bad Wolf?
That right there is me and the Wood Huntsman from one truly awesome pantomime. I don't know what a pantomime is or should be, but this very clever play full of loaded quips and fun really hit the spot. Very talented writers wove together a seamless, character-filled adventure that starred an amazing array of local talent - standouts included the very cool Wolf, the narcissistic Gretel and a very well played Peter. No doubt I will be able to point out some of their faces in years to come on any number of Marvel or DC movies. The star was the script though - written locally by Kate Willoughby & Rachel Dolton it was cleverly pitched to both kids and parents alike. Great fun. Hope they do it again!

Fractured Fairytales
OK I have to say that Fractured Fairytales perhaps my pick of the bunch. It was hilarious. Scrap that, it was hilarious and AMAZING. I am in love with Teddy who not only knew how to clean up using a fireplace, but also managed to rap, pillow fight and score herself a cool Prince from the audience. This was non-stop action and laughter from two very talented comedians who knew how to push all the right comedy buttons! I had my mate Mr C with me, as well as Big M (yep she had to thumb war with Matty on stage) and Biking D which is a pretty diverse crew, however we would have been hard pressed to know who was laughing the loudest. It was on in Fringed up Mandurah (which was an awesome day out, more on that later) and these guys really amped up the fun factor at the great Mandurah Performing Arts theatre! A+ P.S. Teddy is to be given full marks as she is pregnant underneath all that teddy bear fur!

It's not the end!
This was not all we've been up to at Fringe (there may well be a follow-up) but these have been my highlights so far. The important thing to remember as you are sitting in class patiently waiting for the school day to end is that it is ALL STILL GOING ON until the 19th Feb! Get your peoples on the case and get down to a show. Roll up into the Pleasure Garden in Russell Square for loads of free entertainment and some tasty fare. Kids all get a wristband and are registered so its safe for the parentals to find a shady spot and cosy up with some Howling Woods on Gage Roads (yep Big M said you would understand) while we get watching on any number of busker sites or simply play free table tennis (thanks Nova FM crew).
Grab a mate or two and check out the rest of the kids program (all of the shows are Fringeworld UV rated so it's easy to see if you should be there).
It's summer in the City, it's FRINGE. BINGE!!!
Keep cool,
Moe
